When Jackie and her 14-year-old son were preparing to move into their new apartment, an unexpected delay left them just four days away from homelessness. She had already given notice at her old apartment, and with all her funds tied up in move-in costs, she had no money left for temporary housing. Jackie was frantic, fearing she and her son would have to sleep in their car.

A Little Help. A Big Difference.

That’s when the Florida Keys Outreach Coalition’s Quick Assist Program stepped in. The program can provide short-term emergency assistance for families in crisis. In Jackie’s case, it covered the cost of a hotel stay until her new home was ready — a modest but timely intervention that kept her family safe, prevented homelessness, and allowed them to move forward with stability and dignity.

Jackie’s story is one of many. In Monroe County — where the cost of living is the highest in Florida and nearly half of residents live paycheck to paycheck — families are often just one crisis away from losing their homes. The Quick Assist Program helps bridge these critical moments, providing emergency help with rent, utilities, and other urgent needs while also offering case management and eviction-prevention counseling.
